Nature as a symbol Symbolum brutalum
For centuries, the images of animals have been used to invoke a sense of power. Nations and noblemen have adorned their crests with beautiful, regal and fierce animals that embody the personality or intention of the represented. Richard I of England was given the moniker “Lionheart” to describe his abilities as a great warrior and military leader. Lou Gerhig earned his nickname “The Iron Horse” for his durability and stamina throughout each baseball game. There are a hundred more examples that show the desire we have to link ourselves with nature. We choose to connect with these animals because we see traits in them that we admire but also share.
