Maltese Canis familiaris
Drawing its lineage as far back as ancient Greece, the Maltese is a feat of unnatural selection. To imagine that such ancient people took in a wolf for protection and, after years of careful choice, selectively bred in order to design these adorable little pups is absolutely astounding. Interestingly, during the seventeenth century the “pure” form of this evolutionary offshoot almost died out in favor of a similar breed which, when fullgrown was about the size of a squirrel. Alas, the tides of human want for their lapdog changed back in the favor of the traditional breed and it has survived to this day.
Only humanity, it seems, would make a whole business of stripping a species of its independence as a means of gaining a companion which loves us because we care for it.
