“Maternal” Mother Nature

Why do we refer to nature as “Mother Nature”? Is it more comforting for us to think that the natural forces around us are there to provide and protect us? Since when is she servant to us? Why does the greatest force on Earth have to bow down to us? We disrespect her, mistreat her, and turn her beauty into brownfields. Why would she want to take care of us?! We’re like the bad children that run away from home, get tattoos, drink too much, get pregnant and then expect our mothers to take us in unconditionally. Defiant until the end when we realize we cannot do it on our own anymore. Maybe the human race is like this as well… until we exhaust the Earth and she tells us once and for all that we are “on our own”.

There ‘aint welfare after Earth.
