Mascots                                                        Leones et tigrides et ursis

Lions and Tigers and Bears, oh my.  In sports we utilize symbols that often show strength, power or cunning. We draw these symbols from our own technological power and prowess, as well as from fearsome or brave groups of people (e.g. patriots, pirates). We also often draw images of these mascots from nature, identifying with animals that have power or brute force such as large predatory animals. When our sports teams take the field, there is a sense of embodiment of these mascots, and the teams and the fans try to identify with the traits we first admired in our teams symbol. Go Tigers.
