Safety Net Salus Rete
One of the newest sustainable designs is the SafetyNet system that is developed by Dan Watson to help make commercial fishing more sustainable by removing non-target and juvenile fish from being caught. The idea is to provide luminous exit thresholds for young and endangered fish to break away from the net to be able to fully grow. Woven through the net is a group of LED-illuminated holes that will guide small fish out. At the same time, the light’s energy will be provided through the on-board kinetic energy that will be collected within the system. Through this method the unnecessary capture of smaller fish will be potentially reduced through a sustainable approach allowing for this design to be the better choice for commercial fishers. Now it is just up to them to be “smart” consumers.
