As the student proclaimed “Hell Week” comes to an end, many are heading back to bed with the newly found knowledge that sleep is in fact NOT optional. We resist the fact for days, drinking caffeine constantly like we might as well have an IV putting the chemical stimulant directly into our blood stream. The battle can go on for days, fighting to keep going because if you do stop sleep will win. When really no matter how much you think you’ve succeeded in not sleeping, isn’t it more likely that any sleep deprivation is losing? It doesn’t just take its mental tolls. Without rest the whole body goes into a sort of survival mode and ceases to function properly: Skin loses its tautness, the metabolism and other internal functions don’t operate near as efficiently. Not a pretty sight when you hit day 3 without sleep.
